Types of Crimes
There are three classifications of crimes: misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and felony.
What classification a crime is depends on the potential punishment one faces if convicted.
- Misdemeanor crimes are those punishable by imprisonment in jail for no more
than six months, and/or a fine not more than $1000.00. These types of cases are
normally in Justice Courts and Municipal Courts.
- Gross Misdemeanor crimes are those punishable by imprisonment in jail for no
more than one year, and/or a fine of not more than $2000.00. These cases start
in Justice Court and move into District Court.
- Felony crimes are those punishable by one year or more in the state prison, and
may also carry a punishment by death in very limited types of cases. These
cases start in Justice Court and move into District Court.
